Prince of Merewether’s pub burgers crowned ‘best in state’

The Prince of Merewether’s pub burgers are still the very best in New South Wales, with the Morgan Street venue taking out the “Best Burger” gong at the AHA NSW Awards for Excellence on Tuesday.

It narrowly edged out Tattersalls Hotel in Armidale for the crown.

This is the second year in a row the Prince has taken out the same award. Those same burgers were given similar recognition earlier this year too when they were given the nod in the 2023 Readers' Choice Awards. The Newy Local can’t fault the pick either, considering just how good the gastropub menu has been since its revamp.

“Developed in collaboration with our burger expert friends at Rascal our two-time AHA NSW award-winning Prince Beef Burger is made with a whole lot of talent and love from our Prince kitchen,” the pub wrote on Facebook soon after the win.

If your mouth is watering now, we don’t blame you; make sure you head into the Prince on Wednesdays, when you can grab one of these award-winning burgers for just $15.

Newcastle was competitive in several other categories too, with The Shortland Hotel getting the nod for best draught beer quality and The Lucky running second to Hotel Gosford in the race to be named the state’s best casual dining venue.

"The AHA NSW Awards for Excellence shines a light on the hard work, dedication and passion within our industry," AHA NSW CEO John Whelan said on the evening at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney. "This year, the calibre of our finalists and winners has yet again proven that the hospitality offering across NSW is nothing short of world-class."
