The Criterion Hotel in Carrington is now available to hire in its entirety for events. The Bourke Street venue is closing for upstairs renovations this year and co-owners Luciano Cruz and Mitchell Steel decided it was a perfect time to try something a little different while they were taking a break.

Cruz and Steel, who originally bought “The Cri” two years ago, believe the space can fit as many as 50 to 150 people through several downstairs spaces, including the main barroom, the dining area, and the beer garden. While upstairs will be closed off—obviously wading through renos isn’t the vibe—the rest is fair game for whoever hires the pub.

“We know how to throw a good party at The Cri,” Cruz said. “It’s a great size to cater for events from 50-150 – and with perfect spaces for all occasions we’re pumped to be able to offer your friendly local for exclusive hire.”

Event choices include an open-fire BBQ, canapes, grazing tables, and a shared Italian feast. And, of course, anyone using the space can BYO any food. Only drinks will have a price tag.

Beyond this 2024 pivot, the Criterion co-owners are reportedly still deciding on the venue’s future.
